Senior Staff Accountant for Public Interest Law Nonprofit Organization located in Downtown DC

 

Summary

A nonprofit organization with a mission focused on developing lawyers committed to public service seeks a Senior Staff  Accountant to join its financial team.  The NPO is Metro accessible, located in Downtown DC, and has been financially stable and growing for over 20 years.

 

This nonprofit partners with lawyers and law schools to provide the nation’s leading public interest law fellowship program.  We have two offices—one in DC and one in the Bay Area—and our budget has increased from $2 million to over $9 million in the past 10 years. This is a growing and stable organization.

 

The Senior Staff Accountant will work directly with the leader of the Finance and Accounting Department, and he or she will work with members of various departments within the organization.  He or she will reconcile the Federal and private grants given to the NPO to individuals (the NPO is both a grantee and a grantor).  Thus, experience in and understanding of nonprofit grants accounting is a must.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Staff Accountant’s primary responsibility will be to manage the general ledger and accounts receivable for a $10 million annual budget.

 

  • General ledger maintenance, posting transactions & preparing monthly reconciliations for banks and all modules.
  • Allocations of monthly occupancy and personnel costs.  
  • Interacting with staff and management on budget issues, allocations and updates; explain relevant accounting principles to non-finance staff.
  • Post, monitor and reconcile all budget transactions.
  • Conduct monthly reconciliations between AmeriCorps sites and the organization’s accounting system.
  • Monitor the NPO’s grant activity to individual recipients.
  • Prepare the budgets for all federal sites and parent company.
  • Conduct audit on sites and desk audits for selected sites.  
  • Close the accounting periods and years.
  • Generate monthly financial reports and make adjustments to revenue and expenses.
  • Close the fiscal year, reconcile all accounts and prepare annual and federal audit schedules and financial information.
  • Post cash and deposit transactions and bank reconciliations.
  • Manage the accounts receivable and all of its operations.
  • Serve as a liaison to sites and Federal agency.


KNOWLEDGE - SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting is preferred
  • 4+  years previous experience in general ledger and accounts receivables. 2+ years in grants accounting.
  • Superior computer skills, including advanced use of Microsoft Office Excel and accounting databases but Solomon background is preferred.
  • Proficiency of Microsoft EXCEL a plus.
  • Demonstrate understanding of accounting principles and procedures.
  • Hands-on experience in accounts receivable operations.
  • Solid knowledge of the budgeting process.
  • Proven record of year end closing and audit preparations.
  • Goal-oriented, energetic and self-motivated.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain accounting concepts to non-accountants.
  • Organized, accurate and punctual.
  • Commitment to the non-profit’s mission and program priorities; nonprofit experience preferred.
